Message from the Head

Welcome to the Division of Physics and Applied Physics.

Established in 2005, the Division of Physics and Applied Physics (PAP) has since experienced a rapid growth to become a world-class centre for research and education in physics with over 30 faculty members, 12 support staff, 60 research staff, and 100 graduate and 320 undergraduate students. I would like to thank Professor Alfred Huan Cheng Hon for his visionary leadership as the founding Head of Division, without whom these achievements would not have been possible.

Our aim is to build a vibrant community of physicists, where faculty and students are partners in a mutually enriching education process, immersed in learning and discovery. The direct Honours academic programme that we have devised draws from the strong points in several top universities in the US and Europe. It is targeted at providing our undergraduates with a solid foundation for understanding physical phenomena and augmented by optional courses that highlight the frontiers of physics research and their key thrusts in advancing technology.

Today we have a young and dynamic team of faculty members with diverse educational background from top-notch universities over the world, dedicated to both teaching and research. Our major research areas include Condensed Matter Physics, Optics and Spectroscopy, Soft Condensed Matter and Biophysics, Ultracold Matter and Quantum Technology, and Theoretical and Computational Physics. The Division has been highly successful in attracting competitive research funding. Within the last 3 years we have been awarded with over $45 million, which contributed to establishing state-of-the-art laboratories and ambitious research programmes.

Our faculty members have won numerous prestigious awards for teaching and research. We have many publications with high citations in reputable journals including Nature, Science, Physical Review Letters, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Advanced Materials, Nano Letters and others. Most of our graduates found a job within 6 months after graduation. Some of our students are doing postgraduate studies in top universities, such as Harvard, MIT, UC Berkeley and Imperial College London.

I wish you a rewarding and exciting time with us.
