Ultrafast optical spectroscopy

The power of ultrafast optical spectroscopy in chemistry, biology and physics, lies in its ability to temporally resolve phenomena at the fundamental timescales of atomic and electronic motion, and unraveling the competing degrees of freedom that ultimately determine mechanism and functionality. From a materials science perspective, sub-picosecond temporal resolution combined with spectral selectivity enables studies of electronic, spin and lattice dynamics, and more importantly, the coupling between these degrees of freedom.

UOS of strongly correlated electron systems (SCES)

Using pump-probe spectroscopy, we hope to elucidate the quasiparticle dynamics of SCES, such as high-Tc superconductors, heavy fermions, multiferroics and epitaxial nanocomposites. Recently we observed competing orders in the iron-pnictide superconductor (Ba,K)Fe2As2. In the underdoped sample, spin-density wave (SDW) order forms at ~85 K, followed by superconductivity at ~28 K. In addition, a normal-state order emerges that suppresses SDW at a temperature T*~ 60 K, that we showed is a precursor to superconductivity [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 027003 (2010)]].
