We are in the midst of the Digital Revolution, which has fundamentally changed the way people think, behave, communicate, work, and live. It has forged new ways to create knowledge, educate people, and disseminate information. It has restructured the way the world conducts businesses and runs governments. It has provided for speedy delivery of healthcare. It has even created new avenues for entertainment and social networking. The benefits of the Digital Revolution continue to be unleashed, and its potential has not been fully realized. The increased reliance on, and access to, digital networks and information to go about our daily lives has put speed, reliability, and security as first order design criteria for digital communication networks today.
We owe much of these possibilities today to the work of Claude Shannon and Richard Hamming. Claude Shannon laid the foundations of information theory and cryptography, showing both the promises and the limits of digital communications. Richard Hamming paved the way for reliable communications through his work on error-correcting codes.
The Coding & Cryptography Research Group (CCRG) at the Nanyang Technological University is established in 2007 to advance the theoretical and applied frontiers of coding and cryptography, through an interdisciplinary approach.
Claude Shannon and Richard Hamming have blazed the trail for us. We hope to contribute to paving of this trail by placing an occasional tile here and there.
